Na tuto otázku není tak úplné snadné odpovědět, mnoho lidí si dokonce myslí, že žádný. V éře budování komunismu to byl význam vrcholového sportu celkem jasný, sportovní úspěchy byly vizitkou společenského zřízení a socialistické státy proto dělaly vše pro tuto prezentaci. Dodnes tento účel přetrvává v zemích jako je Čína, poslední Olympijské hry toho byly zářným příkladem. Přesto ani současným představitelům státu není lhostejné, kolik přivezou čeští sportovci medailí ze světových kolbišť a podle výsledků je i rozhodováno o financování vrcholového sportu. V této souvislosti stojí za zmínku připomenout slova předsedy vlády Topolánka po skončené letní olympiádě o nutnosti změnit systém financování vrcholového sportu s centralizací jednotlivých tréninkových skupin tak, aby se ušetřilo na nákladech na sportoviště. Tento názor je jistě kuriózní, těžko lze vychovat vrcholového sportovce bez členské základny, která někde prostě sportovat musí.
Tím se dostávám i k hlavní myšlence této úvahy. Dlouhou dobu jsem se domníval, že hlavním a nezastupitelným důvodem pro podporu vrcholového sportu státem je jeho ¨sportovně-osvětový¨ význam. Tvrdí se, že příklady táhnou a kdo by nechtěl alespoň trochu se přiblížit olympijským vítězům a mistrům světa. Je ovšem otázkou, zdali toto vrcholový sport opravdu naplňuje. Nejde jen o to, že například po dvojnásobném olympijském triumfu Martina Doktora na olympiádě v Atlantě zažila česká rychlostní kanoistika sestup z výšin a rozhodně nedošlo k nárůstu členské základny ani k objevení nových talentů (podobné příklady bychom našli ve většině v nedávné minulosti úspěšných sportů). Mnohem závažnější je fakt, že země sbírající nejvíce cenných kovů na mamutích sportovních akcí typu Olympijských her mají největší problémy se špatným životním stylem svých obyvatel. Typickým příkladem jsou Spojené státy, jejichž obyvatelé mají nejvyšší výskyt obezity na světě.
Měl by tedy stát vůbec podporovat vrcholový sport? Určitě ano, ale nikoli tak jako dosud. Většinu financí by měl stát věnovat na podporu výkonnostního sportu, ale také na co nejširší dostupnost veřejných sportovišť, budování cyklostezek, apod. Ale samozřejmě také na osvětu, která je v tomto ohledu v České republice žalostná. Vrcholový sport by měl být výsledkem této podpory, a jeho výsledky by neměly být určující, hodnoceny by měly být zejména dopady podpory sportu na zdraví celé populace.
